Wu Jiawa Prison is situated at the common boundary between Da Feng City and Dong Tai City of Jiang Su Province which is a national ecological demonstration area. It is neighboring the “Da Feng national elk natural protection area”on the eastern flank, with a total area of 200 mu.

　　The prison was originally built in April 1955, and was called Chuan Dong labor reform branch (i.e. Chuan Ｄong Field Sub-branch), and was a subordinate unit of the Shanghai Farm. From its establishment until 1965, it has successively undertaken the educational task of reforming inmates with light sentence, female inmates, and instructors of the juvenile delinquent correction centre, and instructors of the labor and education centre. In January 1983, after obtaining the approval of the Shanghai Public Bureau, it organized and established the “Shanghai Second Labor and Education Centre”, also named “Shanghai Chuan Dong Farm”. On June 15th 2014, after obtaining the approval of the Justice Department, it organized and established the “Shanghai Wu Jiawa Prison”. The prison’s construction area was planned to be close to 50,000 square meters, containing facilities including a general administration building, a police officers’canteen, a teaching auditorium for inmates, an accommodation building, an arts learning building, and a multifunction dining hall.

　　On October 19th 2015, the prison successfully took in the first batch of inmates, signifying the profound accomplishment of its mission of being a “correction centre-rectification centre-prison”, and successfully carried out the transition from “transformation”to “normality”. In the mean time, it establishes a 3-phase objective of “grabbing the grass root, building foundation, tamping basic skill in the first year; becoming a leading and a new type of prison with Shanghai character and possessing a certain connotation in the next 3 to 5 years; and finally to become a safe, lawful, civil and modern prison”,

　　The prison will emphasize the theme of stability and development to fulfill its prison function of the new era in accordance with the law, highlights its core position in law enforcement, and strives to achieve the objective of meeting the requirements of the modern police operational mechanism, to ensure the security and stability of all the places with all its effort, endeavors to build a modern and standard prison with a first class facility and proper management.
