Shanghai Juvenile Criminal Prison was built on 5th November 1953, originally known as Shanghai Reform Center for youth, later changed to its present name on 18th January 2007. Reform Center was shifted 9 times before it finally located itself at Sijing County of Song Jiang District occupying a total land area of 96 mu with a total build-up area of 21,000 square meters. The facility was constructed elegantly with a humane school compound, surrounded by greenery and luscious gardens which constitutes more 40% of the total space, creating an excellent environment conducive for learning. The center is open to the public.

　　Shanghai Juvenile Criminal Prison is the only place for carrying out prison terms for juvenile delinquents between the ages of 14 to 18 years old in the last 60 years, reform center has been propagating the spirit of “Loyalty, Sincerity, Wisdom, Excellence”for juvenile delinquents to position itself as the “Nationwide first-class brand of Juvenile Criminal Prison”, integrating modernized police affairs systems and executing lawful confinement into one specialized feature of the reform center, working hard to specifically explore further in controlling the juvenile delinquents. Over the last 6o years, almost 40 thousand juvenile delinquents who made a mistake in their lives had been transformed to become law abiding citizens possessing knowledge and job skills. After they have returned to their communities, they made significant leap forward in their lives, enrolling themselves into institutions of higher learning while some have become private entrepreneurs. Others have even risked their own lives to save the nation’s properties thus receiving commendation for heroic acts by the nation’s civil administration department.

　　Since 2010, the situation of the Juvenile Criminal Prison has received significant consideration from the communist party’s committee.
